As reported by the Huron County View, “A grant the Huron County Road Commission began seeking back in March has officially been secured.”
The article explains that the Grant is from the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund and will be used for improvements at Lighthouse County Park, including adding a “playscape and recreation area for children, a handicap accessible canoe/kayak launch at the boat ramp area that will be part of the Lake Huron Tip of the Thumb Heritage Water Trail, add a new fish cleaning station and make improvements to over a mile of wooded trails…Additional parking, signage and benches will be added to the park as well.”
Not only is Lighthouse Park a beautiful camping destination, but it’s home to the historic Point Aux Barques Lighthouse. Making improvements to the park will benefit not only campers, but all visitors to the park. That is one of the reasons the Road Commission will be including $144,800 in addition to the total $217,000 awarded by the grant. The funds for the grant may not be received until the end of September 2021. Once received, plans will be completed and construction should begin sometime in 2022. Improvements will be ready to enjoy during the 2023 season.
