Museums in the Thumb

The Michigan Thumb is home to many great museums. From Bad Axe to Caseville and Harbor Beach to Sebewaing, you can expand your artistic horizons at any one of these museums:

Allen House Museum -303 N. Port Crescent Ave., Bad Axe  – 989-550-2733 – Original 1902 Dutch colonial home of Wallace E. Allen, the town’s longest serving mayor.

Bad Axe Museum Of Local History – 110 South Hanselman St., Bad Axe – located on the second floor of the old Bad Axe City Hall.

Caseville Historical Museum – 6733 Prospect St., Caseville – 989-856-9090 –  Wednesday – Saturday Noon to 4:30 pm  – Open year round – Located in the old Maccabee Hall, built in the 1890’s.

Frank Murphy Memorial Museum –  142 S. Huron Ave., Harbor Beach – 989-428-3418 – Open Memorial Day through Labor Day weekend, 10 am – 4 pm, closed on Mondays – showcasing the birthplace of the Harbor Beach local who went on to become Detroit mayor and Michigan governor.

Grice House Museum –  864 N. Lakeshore Rd., Harbor Beach – 989-428-4327 – Open Memorial Day through Labor Day weekend, 1-5 pm, closed Mondays. Call for private tours. Admission: Adults $2. Constructed in the early 1800s by the Grice family.

Huron City Museums – 7995 Pioneer Drive, Huron City – 989-428-4123  Open July and August, Fridays and Saturday 10 am – 4 pm for private tours call 313-331-7371. For Museum Weekend, Admission fees apply.

Luckhard Museum – 590 E. Bay Street, Sebewaing – 989-883-2539 – 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm First Sunday of June through September. The building was once a mission where the bible was taught to local native Americans.

Pigeon Depot Museum – 59 S. Main Street, Pigeon -989-453-3242 or 989-453-2214. Memorial Day through Labor Day weekend – Monday through Friday 10 am – 3 pm, Saturday 10 am – noon. Free admission – donations accepted.

Pioneer Log Village – 210 S. Hanselman St., Bad Axe – 989-550-2733 – Open Sundays in the summer from 2 – 4 pm, Memorial Day through Labor Day. Free admission. There is no bigger group of pioneer log cabins that have been restored in an authentic way in the state.

Pointe aux Barques Lighthouse Museum – 7320 Lighthouse Rd., Port Hope –  inside Lighthouse County Park. 989-428-4749 or 989-428-3035. Memorial Day through the end of September, Saturday and Sunday 10 am – 8 pm. Free admission, donations accepted

St. Mary’s Historical Museum – 4191 Parisville Road, Ruth – 989-864-3523 – Claimed to be the oldest extant log cabin in the U.S. – Free admission – appointment required.

Ten Cent Horse Barn Museum –  Located on Longuski Lane off M-19 at south village limit, northwest of Ubly Dragway – 989-553-4892. Open Sundays Memorial Day through Labor Day, 1-4 pm. Free admission.

Thomas Edison Depot Museum – 510 Thomas Edison Pkwy, Port Huron – 810-982-0891 – Celebrating Edison’s boyhood hometown and his later accomplishments.
